GOOD BYE GEN ART

The recession affects everyone...including Gen Art. The agency released a statement yesterday stating that it will close do to the "economic crisis" during the recession. Ian and Stefan Gerard had to make the immensely sad decision after trying everything in their power to save their business.  I guess that Gen Art benefit auction didn't help as much as they had expected. Gen Art had spawned phenomenal success in the past as it discovered new turned classic designers such as alum Zac Posen and Vena Cava. Unfortunately, emerging talent will have to now look elsewhere for a chance to become style stars. We will miss you, RIP Gen Art! Check out their statement here!

Kyla Emman doing the weather in NYC!

Hey guys! Today was kind of a big deal for me, i was asked to do the morning weather on NY's Wpix news station. Heres how it all happened: Im friends with the weather womans son, Paul so i asked his mom if she could help me out by letting me interview her for a school project. She said yes and then asked me if i would like to be a Friday Forecaster. (You know i never pass any opportunity up!) I said yes and thats how i ended up in front of a green screen at 8:45 am this morning on television. Boy was it an overwhelming experience! I got less than 5 minutes to preview the weather slides and work on what to say! I never ever get nervious but today i was nothing BUT nervous! Anyway, i hope i get a A+, because i even gave a shout out to my teacher! Thank you to Linda Church and the rest of the staff for being so welcoming!

PROM. PROM. PROM.

Prom is fast approaching and girls all around the world are scrambling to find the perfect dress. Ive previously posted tons of pictures of some of my many prom inspirations that included my favorite black Balmain gown. Unfortunately, Balmain gowns are only affordable to real rock stars so i gladly settled on a similar designer dress. Therefore, this weekend i went to pick up my black Aidan Mattox gown.
This runway shot from the Balmain show was the absolute inspiration for my prom gown search. I didn't want to look like i was attending prom. I wanted to look like i was a fashion groupie of a rock n roll couturier.( I think that's a good description right?) This is the Aidan Mattox gown that i bought. It has the elements of the Balmain gown that make it stunning but it is also very practical for a prom banquet. I decided that i would attach a vintage broach at the waist for added glam and later use it to pin up the long train when I'm ready to dance the night away.

Im really excited about the overall look and must say that the picture does it no justice.

Fashion Week Insider: Rebecca Minkoff

I told you guys that i was invited to several off site shows this week and thanks to the glorious snow storm, i didn't have to skip out on school to attend the Rebecca Minkoff show. Besides all the amazingly glamorous frocks, skirts and coats, all models look gorgeous in their spring makeup. I'm drooling (yes really!) over the loose curls that the models are sporting and i am totally going to try it when i get home. As for celeb guest, Agyness Deyn is here sporting her new yet black do. She kind of looks like a geisha in grunge clothing. Also, Erin from The City was wearing some killer heels in the snow! How did she do it?! Anyway, right now I'm sitting with my friend (and our resident stylist) Victor Cordero in the posh "Blogger Lounge". Whats a better way to be inspired than to write a blog post in the middle of a fashion presentation? By the way, Rebecca herself looks phenomenal. Shes got on this great zipper clad motorcycle jacket. I cant wait for you to see all the rest of the pictures so check them out here! Rebecca and I pose for a quick shot.

with the fashion NO NO! brand Ugg. Jimmy Choo and Ugg are rumored to be

making plans to create an Ugg boot with a Mellon twist. Tamara said "Ugg

Australia is the only other footwear i have in my wardrobe." Now, you may say

"Kyla, I saw a picture on the Internet of you wearing Uggs! But you are wrong,

they are Minnatonka Moccasins! Ha!

I bet the JC Uggs will sell great though, any shoe that Mellon touches turns to

gold anyway.

I know, i know, i know! You think your eyes are playing tricks on you too?! Nope. Its true, in this picture Tinsley Mortimer and Levi Johnson are sitting together. Ah, now i do actually believe that the world is going to end in 2012. At the Fleshbot Awards, T and L posed together for a quick picture taken by Gawker. Since when can he hangout with Manhattans elite? He is nobody! Hes not even related to Sarah Palin! But honestly, this is so disgusting. I wonder what she was thinking in this picture. Maybe it was "Why was i sat next to this jerk? Am i all of a sudden on the same level as a white trash playgirl model? If this pic ends up on Fame Game, it will be social suicide." Yep, i bet that's exactly what she was thinking. Too late Tins, its already uploaded.

FAMOUS IN MY OWN RIGHT SERIES PT1

G*LEE is known throughout Manhattan Society as the Asian Philanthropist DJ. She grew up watching her well known mother DJ however, G*LEE is famous in her own right.

What are you best known for?

To start off, being a DJ. The fact that many people do not expect an Asian American and simply a female to be a DJ would be my contradiction for them. Rather so, I am also known as an artist – I’ve always been a poet, and then progressed to be a rapper, after some years I attended Juilliard School of Music when I was 15 for music composition. Saving the best for last, I’m proud to say that I am best known as a musician for all sectors. I’m currently working with Woody Pak (soundtrack composer of the infamous documentary film Planet BBoy) and his company Chaos Theory Music based out in Santa Monica, California. I’ve been known for many things, but in particularly and humbly known as the “Female DJ and Rapper” as many Asians like to categorize me. I’ve been known and quite stirred a stare for the Asian American society in America, particularly because they’ve finally seen someone that has passion – not some faux negative dreams and goals … I’m not a dreamer but a woman of my word.

What was the driving force behind your success?

The driving force … the world. I’ve been exposed and always been aware of social, political, and humane issues occurring around me. I’ve always wanted to find my personal method of giving back to the world and being closely involved as an activist. I’ve always come to recognize the negative propaganda of pop culture today and the ridiculousness of “glamour life”. I’ve grown up to see, as I put it, “fake musicians” in the mainstream scene taking away the real musicians passion. I’ve been so ashamed to be entering this industry where it’s all about image and capitalism. That is my driving force, my passion. For today and the future, continuously driving myself to overcome the negative propaganda's of this corrupted industry full of “money, sex, and guns”


Who inspired you to do what you love?

Not to sound selfish but I’ve been my own inspiration because I was always able to find my own personal inspiration from the changes, mistakes, and flaws of myself. I believe inspiration comes from yourself because you are the one to perceive life. Nonetheless, my faith in the gospel brings me inspiration because I’m able to see all parts of life as one. Realistically, the whole outreach of community in the arts inspires me as a musician and DJ. Proud to say that my role model has always been Lauryn Hill – politically would be Lincoln – and spiritually God.


Do your friends support your career? How so?

Of course! A lot of my friends are upcoming, already are, and aspiring artists in the industry. Few of my elderly friends are activists, organizers, and politicians. From the start and till the end, my friends have always been part of my career either directing me to networking, collaborating, and even booking me for their own event. But most of all, my friends are always there to make sure that I’m always “being myself” because that’s one thing the ‘entertainment industry’ tends to eliminate. They always come out to mass events that I’m DJing for or performing and always say to me “show them the truth G*LEE”


Where are you most likely to be spotted hanging out?

EVERYWHERE, no joke. I’m very unstable when I’m hanging out because a lot of times I tend to travel and venture off to different places. But to be fair – you can spot me at clubs and lounges, obviously. Cafes and small bookstores are my favorite because I commit to mediation. Most of the times, I lay back with my friends in their own shops around L.E.S., Brooklyn, SoHo, and the basic downtown life. To the stalkers, you can spot me at St. Marks Bookstore – Café Taralluci Vino – and shuffling the closet at Opening Ceremony, A.P.C., and vintage boutiques.


If you could meet one person that could change your life, who would it be?

Too close to say, either Oprah Winfrey, Al Gore, Will.i.Am, or Lauryn Hill. All of these are great individuals who are definite humanitarians and activists for peace. Particularly aside from the social leaders, Will.i.Am and Lauryn Hill are my powerful “life changers” because they reveal the optimistic and positive value of the arts – I really respect that.


What’s your favorite thing about your job?

Networking and collaborating. I realized networking is the key to success because you build your personal relations and career direction. Mostly when I DJ, I bump into notable musicians and celebrities that approach me in the booth – through that we always exchange conversations and build a relationship. Except that I reject talking to “stubborn celebrities” who come off all diva and swag on me. (laughter) Oh and of course … the fact that I always get VIP access to all events and clubs that I DJ for, sorry!


What do you see for yourself in the future?

Building a legacy for the positive movement of the arts. I am definitely going to approach the United Nations as a goodwill or representative in foreign relations and poverty missions. Certainly, I am going to create projects and collaborations to focus on building hope for the poor and impoverished. But most of all, creating my own “empire” that focuses to revive the positive culture, all you can do is wait and see.
